My name is Joe Lowry, and on this episode, we're sliding in, getting our jerseys a little muddy, and talking about cards.

In just a minute, we're going to get into the origin of the red card and the yellow card.

But before we talk about where they came from, I want to explain what red cards and yellow cards are and what they do.

During soccer games, referees can call fouls if players break the rules.

That makes sense.

But let's say a player commits a really hard foul or does something reckless or deliberately

foul as an opponent to shut down a dangerous attack.

Those things warrant more than just a quick whistle in a resumption of play.

According to IFAB, aka the International Football Association

Board, aka the governing body that makes all of soccer's rules, a quote, reckless challenge warrants a

card. If a player gets a red card, they're out of the game.
