Michael Jordan could feel their eyes. Old school vets. Look at him over. Critiquing

him. Sparkling gold chains. His red and black Nike tracksuit. His gate. And yes, most

definitely. They were staring at those air Jordans on his feet. It was February 9, 1985.

Jordan's first NBA slam dunk competition. And he was just 21 years old. He was unaware

of the acrimony as he warmed up in his Nike Air Jordan ones. Four months earlier, the NBA

banned a similar shoe worn by Jordan because it did not conform to the predominantly white

sneakers of his teammates. The shoes had become a red hot commodity, outselling those with

the most established stars in the league. Sparking inevitable resentment. And then there

was his choice of the Nike sweats. Nobody had ever worn anything except their respective
