First, the Biden administration's charm offensive in China continues today with a visit

by Commerce Secretary Gina Murmundo.

She's the third high-ranking U.S. official to visit Beijing this summer.

The message is the same.

The U.S. wants to maintain strong economic ties with the world's second largest economy.

How remains the unanswered question?

Marketplace's Noah Saffo has more.

Embaging today, Commerce Secretary Gina Murmundo stood in front of a table full of healthcare

and beauty products all American made all sold in China.

The message that there's lots of room for economic cooperation.

There are also a lot of obstacles.

China's government has mostly stopped talking with the U.S. over issues such as military

operations and climate change policies.

That's in retaliation over then-speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan

a year ago.

President China objects to the U.S. reshoring key supply chains such as microchip production

and banning the sale of advanced chip technologies to China.

Murmundo and her Chinese counterpart today both said it's important to maintain strong ties.

But there has yet to be any specific breakthrough, despite earlier visits by Secretary of State

Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
