0:16.4	I want to start today with yet another reminder based on a new study that gun violence is
0:23.8	dramatically worse in red states.
0:26.0	One of the big narratives that is going to play a significant role in the 2024 election
0:31.0	is that of violent crime and murder and guns and Republicans pointing to so called
0:37.4	Democrat cities and suggesting that urban progressives, I guess, are responsible for
0:44.2	violence and gun violence and crime.
0:46.7	This is very much not true.
0:48.2	There's a really good piece in Politico magazine called gun violence is actually worse in
0:53.1	red states.
0:54.1	It's not even close.
0:55.3	And it looks at this issue in a number of different ways.
0:59.7	And one of the findings of the study is that gun deaths are far less common in the New
1:05.3	York City area than in the US overall debunking one of the very often repeated claims from
1:11.8	the right that New York City is some kind of dangerous hellhole.
1:16.2	And the article explains that if you grew up in the coal mining region of Eastern Pennsylvania,
1:21.9	your chance of dying of a gunshot is about half if you grew up in the coal fields of
1:28.1	West Virginia similar regions, relatively rural and relatively conservative, but you have
1:36.7	stricter gun laws in blue Pennsylvania than in red West Virginia.
1:41.7	And you're much less likely to got die of a gunshot.
1:44.7	And as you read the article, whether you divide the country up regionally or state to
1:50.3	state, you find that historically and presently blue areas are significantly safer when
