0:13.6	ICE detaining U.S. citizens for hours as they attempt to reenter the United States. We were told
0:20.7	it would just be the criminal
0:22.8	illegals that any U.S. citizen had nothing to worry about, that this was about safety and not
0:29.9	about profiling.
0:31.6	But this week, a U.S. citizen was detained by customs and border protection after coming back
0:37.2	from a weekend trip in
0:38.1	Canada, a trip I've done many times as a naturalized American citizen. The individual to whom
0:45.5	this happened is essentially no different than me. This is Bakira Talha, real estate attorney
0:52.3	from New Hampshire, has lived in the United States for nearly
0:55.8	four decades, has been a naturalized American citizen for over 10 years.
1:00.5	And after crossing the Vermont border with his wife, maybe at the exact same crossing
1:05.9	that I've done 30 or so times when coming back from Montreal, he was pulled aside by CBP agents told to get out of the car and when he hesitated for clarification an agent reached for his gun.
1:20.0	Atala complied but was handcuffed wrist twisted dragged away while his wife watched from the car. He asked, why am I being detained?
1:30.3	The response is we don't know.
1:32.3	It's the government.
1:34.3	Agents demanded access to his phone and to his email.
1:37.3	He invoked attorney-client privilege as a practicing lawyer.
1:41.3	They pressured him into signing a statement, allowing them to search
1:45.8	through it anyway.
1:47.2	Under duress, he gave in.
1:49.5	And five hours later, he and his wife were released.
