1067 was a time of incredible change within England.

Fortresses were being constructed everywhere.

Existing fortresses were being seized and then manned by foreign mercenaries.

Estates and farms in the surrounding areas were also being seized and being handed over

to many of these same foreigners.

If you were English, chances are that you either now had were very soon would have a new

landlord who didn't speak your language, didn't share your culture, and didn't much

appreciate either of them.

In fact, from what we've seen from this new French ruling class so far, it's highly

likely that your new landlord considered you inherently threatening.

And if he felt sufficiently threatened by your general existence, he also felt that

you deserved whatever violence you suffered in his attempts to calm his own fears.
