Summary

Welcome to the WHTL Podcast, presented by Moultrie. Your source for Whitetail Deer Hunting Tactics, Stories & Expert Guests. In this episode, we're back in the studio with Clong time friend of the podcast Clint Campbell! We Discuss:
  • Filling a tag early can limit how much you actually learn in a season

  • Eating a tag often leads to more time, reps, and real woodsmanship

  • Shrinking public access concentrates pressure and changes deer behavior

  • If deer disappear when you hunt, your wind or access is likely the issue

  • Overhunting "safe" spots kills long-term opportunity

  • Chasing one mature buck demands realistic expectations

  • Conditions matter more than calendar dates

  • Midweek hunts can outperform weekends on pressured ground

  • Lack of offseason prep compounds problems in-season

  • Nobody is keeping score except you

It's like I've had the season where it's like I went out and I did, I had five total sits and killed two bucks in two states, you know, and I only 105 days. That was it. But it was probably the season where I learned the least. You didn't fill a tag this year. You're in better company than what you realize. This week's episode is with Clint Campbell here on the White Tail podcast presented by Moultrie. We're talking about how you can build off of a quote-unquote unsuccessful season for 2026.

The best case scenario in my opinion is is that you hunt him for like 30-some days and you kill him on day 35.

0:28.6

Because you filled your tag and then you got to spend the entire season him teaching you lessons.

At the end of the day, success should not be measured with a fill tag. It should be measured with what you learned and what you're going to do to improve in the future. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode with Clint. Here we go. This place typically always has deer, right? I see them on camera. I've seen them in here where I'm scouting. The sign is all here. And if I'm consistently not, then I have to step back and go, why would they not be there? All right, Clint, welcome to the Whitetail podcast. I've been enjoying Truth from the Stand podcast. And this topic here, this is, I told you before, I'm not picking on you in any former fashion. This is not, I think this is something that ultimately a lot of people can relate to, and it's not necessarily from, you know, we'll dive in to everything.

1:15.7

But the thesis here is I didn't shoot a buck this year.

1:18.7

Now what?

1:19.7

And I know you had hunted really, really hard.

1:22.7

But before we get into all of that on a scale one to 10, how was your deer season all things considered?

1:29.3

Man, I would say like a solid seven.

1:33.5

Like anything above a seven would be like I had like

1:37.5

some sort of tag fulfillment or whatever.

1:39.9

But it was, I mean, I had all the experiences, you know, it didn't leave me wanting for anything.

1:48.3

I spent a ton of time, you know, which I'm blessed to be able to do.

1:51.0

You know, not everyone's able to kind of take the amount of time that I'm able to to hunt consecutively and consistently or whatever the case is.

1:58.2

So I think ever since I've been able to do that, like I've looked at my deer season

2:03.8

just a lot differently because I think in the past when maybe I was on shorter time,

2:09.5

just because of the way my job was, you know, I work remote now. You know, I've been doing that

2:12.9

for five-ish years or whatever the case is. And ever since then, it's like I really kind of took

2:18.6

advantage of being able to kind of hunt more mornings and evenings like during the work week,

2:22.2

you know, or taking trips and extending them because I can work remotely from my travel

2:26.9

trailer or whatever the case is with some Starlink and a cell phone and whatever. And so I've

2:32.3

been taking more advantage of that and I've just been able to have a lot more time
