Summary

In this episode of Battleground, Patrick Bishop and Roger Moorhouse dive into the complex and shifting dynamics of the Ukraine conflict.

We begin by examining how the escalating tensions between the Trump administration and Iran are creating ripples that reach all the way to Kyiv.

As the U.S. appears to seek a rapid exit from its "Operation Epic Fury" in the Gulf, we analyse what this perceived strategic incoherence means for future American support—or lack thereof—for Ukraine.

The heart of today's discussion focuses on explosive leaked intelligence reports detailing Vladimir Putin’s intensifying paranoia. From installing surveillance on his own staff to avoiding his usual residences, the Russian leader is reportedly on "high alert" for a potential coup or drone assassination attempt from within his own elite circle. We take a close look at:

  • The Shoigu Suspicion: Why former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu is now being viewed as a "potential destabilising actor".

  • A "Slimmed-Down" Victory Day: Why the traditional May 9 military parade in Red Square will feature no heavy weaponry this year.

  • The Cost of War at Home: How plummeting approval ratings, 14.5% interest rates, and a crackdown on Telegram are fuelling public dissatisfaction in Russia.

Hello and welcome to Battleground with me, Patrick Bishop and Roger Morehouse.

    0:17.2

Once again, all eyes are on the Gulf this week with little attention to spare

    0:21.8

for the Ukraine conflict. But as we very well know, Roger, the two events are intimately

    0:27.0

connected. And what happens in Trump and Israel's war with Iran has already and will continue

    0:32.3

to impact very significantly on the shape of things in Ukraine and particularly Russia.

    0:39.2

There were initial assessments that the Iran war would be good for Putin.

    0:43.7

Well, they seemed to be wide of the mark with increased public unrest

    0:47.0

and rumors of assassination plots and coups multiplying.

    0:51.9

This year's annual Second World War victory parade on May the 9th will be a

    0:56.4

very muted affair, it seems. We'll come on to all that later, but first let's start talking

    1:02.9

about Iran. Now, the situation in the Gulf changes almost by the hour, so listeners will have to

    1:08.1

bear with us if what we're talking about now turns out not to be the case by the time you hear this.

    1:13.5

But at the time of recording, it seems that it's Trump, not the Mullers, who have blinked first,

    1:20.2

and that the man who's repeatedly claimed victory and bragged that Tehran is begging for a deal

    1:25.3

is now ready to accept an outcome that could only be

    1:28.9

interpreted, I think, as a massive humiliation for him and for America.

    1:35.0

    Yeah, that's right, Patrick.

    1:36.1

And, of course, this could all go up in a puff of smoke, as you say, as soon as the situation

    1:41.8

changes, or, of course, Trump changes changes his mind as he tends to do.

    1:45.2

But for the moment, it certainly seems that the Americans have lost all appetite for further military action,

    1:51.1

and they will in the long run be prepared to sign off on a deal that would at very best restore the status quo ante.

    1:58.2

Steady U-turn seems to be in progress with the announcement early this week that Project
