Summary

On July 24th, 1984, Brenda Lafferty and her 15 month old daughter Erica were brutally murdered in their American Fork, Utah home. Their deaths shocked this small, tight knit community of largely Latter Day Saints church members who could not imagine such a crime occurring in their town. What shocked them further was the identity of the killers.

In the best selling book "Under The Banner of Heaven" investigative journalist Jon Krakaur dug deep into Brenda and Erica's case, and provided the extraordinary historical context that (he believes) led the killers to target an innocent young mother and her child. Now, Academy Award winning screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black has adapted the story for a Hulu series starring Daisy Edgar Jones as Brenda and Andrew Garfield as the detective who is sworn to bring her killers to justice. 1:33.0	and today we're turning to a case that's kind of been brought back to life in the news recently.
1:38.0	We're going to be talking about the horrific murders of 24-year-old Brenda Lafarty and her toddler daughter, Erica.
1:46.0	This happened on July 24, 1984 in American Fork, Utah.
1:51.0	And it's in the news again because of the new Hulu original series called Under the Banner of Heaven,
1:58.0	based on the book by John Crackauer of the same name.
2:03.0	And we've watched the series full disclosure. They actually were a sponsor of Real Crime Profile a couple months ago,
2:11.0	and I've read the book. And I think there's just a lot to go over as far as the murder,
2:17.0	what is or isn't depicted in the show. And I just love to get Jim and Laura's thoughts about the whole case.
2:24.0	Yeah, the series was, I think, very well done. It's very compelling.
2:29.0	But the case, the underlying case is horrific. And as we always do, we'll start with the victimology.
2:36.0	And as you said, Brenda Lafarty and her daughter, Erica, who was an infant, were brutally murdered.
2:45.0	And this is a very rare type of crime where someone comes in from the outside and murders a mother and daughter in the safety and sanctuary of their home.
3:02.0	And it's a crime that in the level of violence that occurred and the disgusting nature of it are really the foundation for this entire series.
