Summary

A political earthquake has struck Budapest. After 16 years of dominance, Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz Party have been unseated in a resounding victory by Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party. With a historic 79% turnout and a two-thirds supermajority, the Hungarian landscape has been permanently altered—but what does this mean for the rest of the world? In this comprehensive two-part special, host Patrick Bishop sits down with old friends and Hungarian experts Julius Strauss and Boldi Gyori to dissect a week that changed Europe. We explore the sheer scale of the Tisza Party’s victory and how they overcame the "dirty tricks" of a quasi-autocracy. Julius and Boldi share the ground-level emotion of the election and analyse what we can expect from Péter Magyar—a former Fidesz stalwart turned revolutionary. We also examine the immediate ripples felt in Moscow, Brussels, and Washington. Hello and welcome to Battleground with me Patrick Bishop. Today I'm going to be talking to our old friends, Julia Strauss and Boldi Giori, have had a momentous event

0:21.8

they've both been witnessing close up, and that is, of course, last Sunday's elections in Hungary,

0:27.4

which brought a resounding end to the 16-year rule of Victor Orban and his Fidesz party.

0:33.6

But the victory of Peter Magia and the Tissar Party, freedom and respect is the translation

0:39.8

usually given, is truly momentous for Hungary, of course, but also for Ukraine, for Europe,

0:46.1

and for Russia and America. We'll be digging into all that, but first, let's say something

0:51.0

about the scale of the victory. The TISA party secured approximately 54% of the vote

0:57.1

compared to Fides's 38%.

1:00.0

So TISA is now set to hold at 138 of 199 seats in the National Assembly,

1:07.3

a two-thirds supermajority that allows for constitutional amendments.

1:12.8

And the election saw a record turnout of over 79%.

1:17.9

Now, this, it must be remembered, was in spite of the great power of the quasi-autocracy that

1:24.2

Allban has created, being brought into play to keep them in office.

1:28.7

And they used, of course, every dirty trick in the book imaginable, and then a few more.

1:33.8

Now, look, you're both Hungarians.

1:36.2

You're half-Hungarian, Julius, and Boldie, you're a proud 100% Hungarian, as far as I know.

1:43.0

How did you feel when you realised that Orban and Fides had

1:47.9

been so thoroughly crushed? Thank you, Patrick, for asking. So what's interesting, of course,

1:53.5

I was immensely relieved and happy. I mean, I lived, I'm 28 now, and Orban has spent 20 years

2:00.3

in power altogether as a prime minister.

2:03.4

I was born in the year when he first became prime minister in 1998,

2:07.3

and I was 12 when he began his second premiership in 2010 and has been ruling Hungary ever since then.
