Summary

In 1988, a routine flight took off from London Heathrow. It was the second leg of a transatlantic flight that would stop in JFK, before heading even further west, to Detroit. In fact, Flight 103 had started off in Frankfurt. But something got on the flight in the German airport that shouldn't have. It was a brown samsonite suitcase, filled with clothing and a Toshiba cassette tape player. Inside the electronics was a pound of semtex and a timer. Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over the Scottish countryside, killing everyone aboard, 11 people on the ground, and scattering debris for miles around the countryside. But who had planted the bomb? You're listening to the mens rea podcast and this is the story of the Lockerbie bombing. The Oh, On the afternoon of the 21st of December 1988, passengers lined up in Frankfurt Airport to board a plane.

It was a Boeing 727, a smallish aircraft that would bring them to London, where they would board a larger plane for the longer part of their journey.

The flight was operated by Pan Am at the time one of the largest

international passenger airlines. Every country has an airline, their byline

said. The world has Pan Am. But this particular flight and its name

were 35 students from Syracuse University in New York. They'd been studying away
