Summary

In 1988, a routine flight took off from London Heathrow. It was the second leg of a transatlantic flight that would stop in JFK, before heading even further west, to Detroit. In fact, Flight 103 had started off in Frankfurt. But something got on the flight in the German airport that shouldn't have. It was a brown samsonite suitcase, filled with clothing and a Toshiba cassette tape player. Inside the electronics was a pound of semtex and a timer. Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over the Scottish countryside, killing everyone aboard, 11 people on the ground, and scattering debris for miles around the countryside. But who had planted the bomb? 0:00.0	You're listening to the mens rea podcast and this is the story of the Lockerbie bombing. The Oh, On the afternoon of the 21st of December 1988, passengers lined up in Frankfurt Airport to board a plane.
0:50.0	It was a Boeing 727, a smallish aircraft that would bring them to London, where they would board a larger plane for the longer part of their journey.
1:01.0	The flight was operated by Pan Am at the time one of the largest
1:06.0	international passenger airlines. Every country has an airline, their byline
1:11.2	said. The world has Pan Am. But this particular flight and its name
1:17.8	would be seared into the world's memory. This was Panam flight 103.
1:25.0	It was just days before Christmas.
1:28.0	Most people were making a long journey home for the holidays.
1:32.0	Airports were busy and this flight was nearly full. On board
1:36.1	were 35 students from Syracuse University in New York. They'd been studying away
1:41.6	from home for a semester at the London Syracuse campus.
1:46.0	The UN Commissioner for Namibia, Burnt Carlson, was flying to New York to attend a signing ceremony for the New York Accords on the 22nd.
1:57.0	James Fuller, CEO of Volkswagen America, was aboard having attended a meeting in West Germany, along with his marketing
2:05.6	director.
2:07.7	CIA Deputy Station Chief in Beirut, Matthew Gannon was aboard, along with Major Chuck McKee, who was with the Defense Intelligence Service.
2:18.0	They were accompanied by two special agents who acted as security guards.
2:24.0	The plane flew from Frankfurt to London Heathrow
2:27.5	where those aboard the smaller jet transferred,
2:30.3	along with their belongings,
2:32.0	to a larger one, a 747 named Clipper Made of the Sea.
2:37.0	Once the Jumbo jet was filled with passengers from the first leg of the flight and those boarding in London, there were 243 passengers aboard,
2:46.8	mainly from the US but also from the UK.
