Summary

This week we bring back #YayHamlet! Cristina Lundy and Fergie L. Philippe talk about the similarities between Hamilton (the musical) and the works of Shakespeare, and why actors need to honor those pieces in the same way. Hint: no need to overact it; all the words are right there on the page. And they're not saying it's easy! Fergie used to think he had to do Shakespeare in a British accent because FANCY. We also talk about an unrealistic need for all works of art to be perfect and right and accurate when in reality, so much of it is about writers being inspired by, as Cristina says, "the influences that pollinate them as artists."

Plus! Dream casting! Cristina and Fergie cast Hamilton actors in a slew of Shakespeare plays, they cast a Ted Lasso Much Ado About Nothing, and then we cast Ted Lasso characters in Hamilton.

Exchange. Last week, we talked a lot about the 2023 Tony Awards, including Fergie's experience

0:49.7

performing at the show, how the writer's strike affected the evening, and the fact that history

0:54.0

was made with so many BIPOC and non-binary folks taking home awards.

0:58.4

So here's the thing about Christina and Fergie. They're both massive Shakespeare nerds,

1:02.4

and both of you, please take that as the compliment it is. Last week, we talked a lot about the

Juliet. In this episode, we're weaving the Shakespeare conversation into Hamilton, and we end

with some dream casting. Let's get to it, enjoy. Okay, yay Hamlet.

1:31.4

Yeah, Hamlet. I don't know where we even want to start. I mean, obviously the comparison to

1:38.3

Hamilton, and like as a modern-day form of Shakespeare has come up on the show. This is episode,

like almost 400. It's come up a lot. We can talk about that. We can talk about the actual references.
