With this show, we'll continue with the story of Pickett's Charge.

As you guys will recall from the last episode, the sliding of Pickett's division to the

left had finally closed the gap between the two wings of the charge, as the Confederates

closed up on Cemetery Ridge.

But although they now had a united front, more or less, this by itself didn't produce

a united effort, as far as hitting the federal line.

As we saw from the last show, even though the gap had been closed, it was still almost

as if the two wings of the charge were nevertheless destined to fight two different, but parallel

battles that ended the same way.

The left wing of the great charge, made up of pedigrues and trimbles troops, would stall

at the Emmitsburg Road, which proved to be both literally and figuratively a barricade

to their further advance.

The fences along this northern portion of the road were intact and too strongly built,

and the federal's fire too hot for the rebels to stop long enough to pull them down, so

they had to climb over the fences instead.

As one of the Confederates clambered over the first fence, he said the enemy bullet striking

the wood, quote, rattled with the distinctness of large raindrops pattering on a roof.
