Summary

The best students I ever had really had a clear sense of their influences. In the old days really studying and imitating your masters was seen as an essential part of the creative path. But what happens when you get stuck in this phase and can’t seem to break out into something that feels more truly yours? What do you do then? In this episode we are going to explore exactly what to do when your creative hero’s are overshadowing your presence in your own work, and the fun and surprising solution to breaking out of this rut.

0:22.0

Hey, you're listening to the creative pep talk podcast.

I'm your host, Andy J. Pizza.

1:38.0

Is this the wise way to use this time should I be making something else? It is such an awful feeling and so distracting from trying to get into the flow-stay.

1:50.0

And that's why at the start of the show, there's a jingle that says on the creative journey, it's easy to get lost.

1:56.0

Because for me, the experience of being lost is the most apt analogy for the creative struggle.

2:05.0

That feeling of trying one thing, trying to work on one piece or one project and then giving up and then trying another and doing the same thing over and over, never actually making any progress, that feels like being lost.

2:20.0

Like take one step that way, and you're worried like am I getting closer to where I want to be, or further away?

2:27.0

Like all you can do in that moment is freeze. I mean think back to actually being lost at the pharmacy as a kid, you know, worried about like where's my mom?

2:38.0

Or maybe you got lost in the woods, like Bonneveur, I don't know.

2:43.0

But seriously, every wrong move feels like the one where everything's going to be lost, you're going to miss your chance, you're going to miss the opportunity.

2:55.0

And so, Mom has left the store without you, your dreams are leaving the station without you.
