Happiness. Sometimes it seems like it's right in front of us. Our lives are going well and we really think we've arrived.

And then shortly afterwards, it's like it's gone. What happens? What is this roller coaster of life called happiness where we think we have it and then it's gone and then it comes again?

Is there any way to maintain a sense of peace of mind and happiness throughout our lives?

That's what we're going to look at today.

And the secret word today is balance.

I remember the first time I really discovered the concept of balance. I grew up in the United States and I'd never traveled overseas anywhere.

Well, one summer I worked at a job that was about a hundred hours a week and it was a lot of work and it was exhausting

But I saved all that money so the next summer I was able to go to Europe for three months

I did it on a very tight budget because I didn't have a lot of money,

but I was able to make it for three months and had a wonderful time.

We're here in the states where I grew up, I was taught that you work very hard your entire life

till you turn about 65, then you retire. You probably will get about two weeks off a year,

and the 50 other weeks of the year you just work hard and that's the story that I've been told.

Well something wonderful happened when I went to Europe.

I learned that what I been taught wasn't the same thing that was being taught around the world.

Because some people, quite a few people in Europe, when they started their jobs, they actually

got six to eight weeks off a year right away and they often didn't even work a 40 hour

work week so in regards to work and vacations they had a far more balanced

approach to living and I found that their lives seemed better to me.

I liked what they were doing.

They would often take two hours for lunch just to converse and talk to friends and then they would do it again at dinner. It was such a different lifestyle
