Summary

Derrick Dixon from Whitetail Research has been blowing up on YouTube — and for good reason. He’s using thermal drones to uncover whitetail deer behavior in a way that hunters have never seen before. In this episode, Derrick shares how he quit his job (actually got fired the day his second child was born!) and went all-in on his dream: studying whitetails with cutting-edge drone technology. The result? Groundbreaking insights on mature buck bedding, travel routes, scrapes, rubs, morning vs evening movement, and thermals that could change the way you think about deer hunting forever.

We dive into:

  • Why thermal drones may be the biggest breakthrough in whitetail research since GPS collars
  • How bucks really move in the rut — mornings vs evenings
  • The truth about buck bedding and if “J-hooks” really happen
  • What scrapes, rubs, and travel efficiency reveal about mature deer
  • Why some spots look un-huntable (and how to approach them)
  • Derrick’s personal story of betting it all on a drone and exploding on YouTube

And So Much More!

If you’re serious about whitetail hunting tactics, understanding mature buck behavior, and staying ahead of the curve, you don’t want to miss this episode.

The landscape of whitetail research is quickly changing, and I brought in Derek with whitetail

research to share some of his findings. One thing that's worth saying is that if GPS color studies

0:10.1

tell you everything that I can tell you off of my research, then they would be, but they can't.

I wanted to potentially debunk or solidify some of the things that we conventionally think about

0:20.0

White Tail. The main thing that I've seen that a lot of people just have in the back of their brain is the idea of Bucks betting on the leeward side of the ridge. And also maybe even the way that they travel with the wind in terms of traveling into a headwind and stuff like that. And from what I've seen, you can just throw all that out the window and start trying to apply thermals into all those situations. And we get into all of that right now on the White Tail podcast presented by Moultrie. The statistic that I started focusing on was actually net displacement. If the deer's bedded in the morning and then he makes his travel route and then he beds back down, what's the distance between those two locations? And in the morning, it was almost always four times greater

than in the evening. Derek, welcome to the White Tail podcast. How you doing this morning? Yeah,

0:58.8

man, thanks for having me on. I'm doing pretty good. A little bit tired, but pretty good.

Well, thanks for making the time here. I firmly believe what you're doing here is reshaping a lot of

1:08.2

white tail knowledge, or I guess you're in a constant process of

1:14.1

maybe approving, disproving theories or at least just laying out the information of what you've

1:18.2

been seen. But I want to give you an opportunity to briefly introduce yourself because

1:24.8

you just boom bolted onto the scene it's like i didn't even

1:29.3

introduce myself on on youtube it's no one needs to know my name i just just hop on yeah yeah so who are you

1:35.3

man yeah yeah and uh well my name's Derek dixon and uh i'm just kind of a long time bow hunter

um been passionate about wildlife and wildlife research and

land management, all these types of things. And in 2019, starting in 2019, I got married. That was

1:53.0

kind of like the big shift for my life. I got married in that time frame. And then I also got a new

1:57.4

job. And I became a tech guy at a private school. And I was living in a

2:02.7

bigger city. I'd kind of was still going to college a little bit for conservation biology, but I was

2:08.2

really kind of now focusing and shifting focus towards this technology job because it was he was paying

the bills and a little bit more pretty good for me. And then it was just a, it was kind of a life shift for me at the moment.

And at that time frame as well, though, I was pretty passionate about kind of cameras and
