The godwins had the king of France and the Holy Roman Emperor acting as their surrogates,

while they were off constructing no less than two separate invasion fleets off of two separate

English coasts.

Which means that Edward was probably realizing that he went at the real king and missed.

So Edward put England on medieval death con one.

The king, increasingly desperate, had mobilized both Somerset and Devon in hopes of protecting

the southwest coast from whatever herald was likely cooking up with all his new friends

from Dublin.

To counter the threat coming from the east, King Edward placed the royal fleet of about

40 ships at Sandwich under the command of Earls Ralph and Aude.
