We're recording this episode, the day after the anniversary of the DEAP raid, 79 years ago.

It's the 20th of August.

They've been on the 90th of August, 1942, an Allied amphibious attack took place on the

German health port of DEAP with more than 6000 infantry put ashore.

It did not go well, did it, Jim?

No, it didn't.

It didn't go well at all.

I remember having to give a lecture on this once to a whole bunch of Americans.

That was quite a hard, that was quite a hard pill to swallow, I have to say, because

it was all by the word.

There were a handful of US Army Rangers.

Yeah, there were some Rangers, they weren't there, yeah.

Yeah, and there were some sort of amazing heroics and stuff.

The most amazing thing about the DEAP raid is that, you know, they're all home by lunchtime.

They're literally back in England by 2 o'clock.

Yeah.

It's an absolute extraordinary apart from those obviously didn't get out.

But, you know, it's something like 5,300 casualties.

And then later on in the day is when the big air battle is, it's not, not.

Yes, there's a lot of aircraft in there, isn't there?

Yeah, there's a lot of aircraft lost, you know, it's like 64, 64 Spitfires, 20 Hurricanes,

10 Mustangs.
