Summary
Given all the obstacles to living a good life, are there specific steps we can take to improve our lives? If we focus on three things, our lives can get better and better. First, identify what is causing the problems in our lives. Second, determine the external factors that negatively influence us. But thirdly and more importantly, ask ourselves what we can do internally to change, as that is what we have the most control over.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. I want to share a very silly story with you. |
| 0:10.0 | There was a man years ago who walked all around in his bare feet, but he kept cutting his feet, bumping his feet, and getting injured because of all the things that are on the ground. |
| 0:21.0 | Well, one day he came up with an idea of how to solve this problem. |
| 0:25.0 | He was going to start gathering leather that he could find and put it on the ground. |
| 0:29.0 | But since he didn't know where he was always going to go, |
| 0:32.0 | he had to start putting it on the ground all over the place. |
| 0:35.0 | And in theory, he could walk all the way around the earth if he wanted to, so he had to put leather on the whole earth. |
| 0:42.0 | Well, as you can probably imagine people thought he was pretty |
| 0:45.6 | silly until one day he realized you know a better idea would be to put leather on my feet and |
| 0:52.4 | cover them instead of trying to cover the hoard with leather. |
| 0:56.4 | Now this may sound like a really silly, maybe perhaps even goofy story, but the truth of it is many of us live our lives this way, and I want to explain |
| 1:07.0 | how. As we walk through life, we bump into things, lots of things. |
| 1:13.0 | And often what we do is, instead of saying, |
| 1:15.0 | well, what could I do differently not to bump into that |
| 1:17.0 | or take care of myself so I don't get hurt? |
| 1:20.0 | We blame the other people or blame the things that are causing us to suffer instead of saying you know what I really need to change is myself |
| 1:28.0 | Not cover the whole earth with leather that's ridiculous |
| 1:31.7 | But yet don't we often do it that way? For example, if you commute |
| 1:37.4 | anywhere, whether it's by car, by train, by bus, by bicycle, guess what? |
| 1:42.1 | There are going to be a lot of people out there that you're going to be |
| 1:45.0 | encountering and some of them may not be very polite. Probably almost every day you may run into people that are |
| 1:51.7 | rude, disrespectful and in many ways offensive. |
