Summary

A ruptured tendon can do more than wreck your training plan. It can expose the parts of you that only feel steady when life is easy. We start from that raw place and talk honestly about resilience when recovery is slow, pain is loud, and the future feels like a long, frustrating process instead of a quick fix. Then we drop into one of the clearest case studies in grit and leadership you’ll ever hear: Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance expedition. Trapped in Antarctic pack ice, forced to aba...

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.

0:20.2

For those of you that watch my main undone and life show, you know that I preach about resilience

0:24.8

all the time. So even as I'm saying this, I'm at a place in life right now where I need to

0:29.3

really practice what I preach because I recently suffered a ruptured bicep tendon while boxing

0:33.9

and I'm in the early stages right now of what looks to be a very long recovery process,

0:38.5

very painful, just to try and get back to where I was, right? So it kind of feels like I'm, you know,

0:43.7

staring down both barrels of this horrible, frustrating process in the hopes that I can regain

0:48.9

some semblance of where I was prior to the injury, right? So the situation has caused me to think

0:53.7

about stories of resilience

0:55.1

quite a bit, you know, where men faced circumstances that are way more insane than the one I'm

0:59.8

currently facing, and they did so with grit and determination and faith and resilience,

1:04.8

and I'm going to share some of those stories with you this week. So it's October 1915,

1:09.9

and the ship is dying underneath them. Ernest Shackleton

1:13.9

stands on the deck of his ship called the Endurance, and he watches the Antarctic pack ice

1:18.3

do what it's been doing for months at this point, squeezing the ship that he and his men are on.

1:23.8

So the whole of the ship is being crushed, all of the beams are splintering. The pumps can't keep up. And essentially the freezing ocean is coming into the ship now. And there's absolutely nothing Shackleton nor his men can do to stop it. And from there, he does something that no captain ever wants to do. He gives the order to abandon ship. So all 27 crew members climb off of the ship and onto the

1:46.2

ice with whatever they can carry in their hands. And their nightmare is realized when they see

1:51.3

their ships sink beneath the frozen surface of the Waddell Sea. There are roughly 1,200 miles

1:57.3

away from civilization. There are no outpost nearby. There are no radios. There are no

2:01.8

airplanes. There are no satellites. Really, no one on earth except them even knows where they are.

2:07.1

And it's 40 degrees below zero. And the ice shelf that they offloaded onto is drifting north away from

2:13.2

the land and it's breaking apart beneath their feet. So with every measurable metric that you can think of,
