One month ago, I published a podcast with Wildcoast, Zach Plopper,

0:21.6

about the environmental initiative known as 30 by 30.

0:24.6

It became newsworthy because the WSL was asking all of their followers to sign and support it.

0:30.6

And a lot of the surf and fishing communities felt as though the initiative was far too vague to simply sign one's name to.

0:38.5

And so they were campaigning for the WSL to provide, or at least seek, a more definitive

0:44.1

plan for what 30 by 30 wants to do with ocean protection, ocean access or closure, or preservation.

0:52.6

And Zach did a great job of giving an overview of the complexity of

0:56.3

environmental protection at large and also an overview of 30 by 30. But for anyone who was

1:26.6

people stating that they agree with everything that Zach said.

1:29.9

They found it to be insightful, but they also wanted to hear from someone representing a community

1:34.8

that makes their living off of the ocean whose livelihood might be affected by potential restrictions

1:41.2

put in place by 30 by 30.

1:43.3

And I found a few people to represent that voice.

1:46.5

And today's guest is perhaps the most qualified among them. Casey Shed is a self-professed,

1:53.0

quote, dedicated and subpar surfer from San Clemente. His father, also a surfer, is Bill Shed,

1:59.3

and Bill's father founded a company called Aftco, 63 years ago.

2:04.6

Aftco makes high-performance fishing gear, hardware, but also clothing.

2:09.3

They are a U.S. manufacturer and leaders in the fishing industry.
