Summary

In this momentous episode, Patrick Bishop and Saul David analyze the global shockwaves following the US capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and its profound implications for the war in Ukraine.  They explore the rise of the "Donroe Doctrine"—a new American focus on the Western Hemisphere—and how the seizure of the Russian-flagged tanker Marinera marks a direct humiliation for Vladimir Putin.  The duo also discusses the groundbreaking commitment from Britain and France to deploy troops for a Ukrainian peace deal, alongside President Zelensky’s high-stakes decision to place spy chief Kyrylo Budanov and drone expert Mykhaylo Fedorov at the heart of his administration.  From the potential takeover of Greenland to the collapse of Russian air defenses, this episode breaks down a week that has fundamentally shifted the geopolitical landscape. Hello and welcome to battleground in Ukraine with me Patrick Bishop and Saul David.

0:17.6

It's been another momentous week in global affairs that began with the astonishing

0:22.5

news on the weekend that on Donald Trump's orders, US Special Forces had captured the

0:27.6

Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro and his wife Celia Flores in Caracas and hauled them off

0:34.2

to New York where they were indicted on drug trafficking charges.

0:38.7

Inevitably, in this joined-up world where interests and power are so intimately intermeshed,

0:44.6

this is going to have big possible consequences for our focus of interest, Ukraine.

And a lot more besides, isn't that right, Saul?

0:53.0

Yeah, I mean, just consider this, Patrick. Venezuela is a fully paid up member of what

Roger Boyes in the Times calls a liberal international. And that's the club of autocratic

sanction-busting states that work together to restrict American influence in their respective

1:09.8

regions. It includes, of course,

1:11.9

China, North Korea, Iran and Russia. So by this calculation, the seizure of Maduro, a Russian ally, is not

1:20.2

good news for Putin, not least because it's yet another example of how feeble are the Russian air

1:25.5

defences deployed by the Venezuelans.

1:28.6

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegeseth made a mocking reference to this

1:32.4

during a visit to a shipyard in Virginia earlier this week,

1:36.0

saying those Russian air defenses didn't work quite so well, did they?

1:40.4

Question mark.

1:41.3

But then we already knew that, didn't we, Patrick, by the ease with which they were

1:44.8

suppressed, that is, the Russian supplied air defences were suppressed by Israeli and US missiles

1:49.9

and planes during the recent strikes in Iran. Yeah, I mean, there's all evidence out there that,
