Hello, Ghost Family.

Welcome to Family Ghosts.

I thought it was over.

I thought you were gone.

As I walked through the dark house,

wishing your lamp was still on,

I lit a candle.

It was a pretty red glow.

I should have known that you were still close.

Those are the opening lyrics to one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands.

When I was working with composer Luis Guerra on the theme song for Family Ghosts,

that theme song you just heard, still close is the song I sent him as a reference point.

And that's because Family Ghosts is a show that grew out of a feeling I've had,

my whole life, a feeling of being haunted.

Not by translucent rates that clank chains in the night,

but by people and stories from my family's past.

I've always had this sense that I'm living in the shadows cast by those people

and those stories that these ghosts, as I like to think of them, are still close.

And it turns out that that feeling is actually one of the foundational ideas of an entire religious movement.
