Summary

Kemp Powers is a playwright, screenwriter, and co-director, and this year, he's one of the most talked about writers in our business. Kemp has not one, but TWO highly talked-about films in the 2021’s awards circuit, Pixar’s Soul (which he co-wrote with Pete Docter and past guest Mike Jones, as well as co-directed) and One Night In Miami, which he adapted from his own play, AND which was just nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. As someone who has adapted a feature from previously existing work, AND written for one of our industry’s most coveted IPs (Star Trek), Kemp is the perfect guest to discuss the art of ADAPTATION in screenwriting.

Lorian, how is your week?

0:50.1

My week was great.

0:52.2

Two interesting things happened this week. One is that I I wasn't able to

1:00.4

re-compartmentalize it, compartmentalize everything and that my time streams got off. So I had jury duty this week, but I didn't put it together that it actually impacted my week in some real way. Like I had so separated jury duty. So Wednesday I

texted Jeff and Meg like, hey you guys, I might have jury duty on Friday because it didn't make sense that jury

duty and my actual week were like the same timeline for some reason I think what's

happening is that I need to get out of the house.

1:33.5

Big picture. I need to get the hell out of my house. I need something different to happen.

1:39.2

I'm, yeah, and then the other thing is that I am feeling very much like back at the beginning on a project I've been working on for a very long time, which is very disheartening, right?
