Summary

In a “can’t we all just agree to disagree?” age, how do Christians know which doctrines are worth dividing over—and which ones faithful believers can disagree about in good conscience?

The New Testament repeatedly warns that false teachers will arise from within the church, twisting the gospel and drawing people away. But that raises a crucial question: what exactly counts as “the gospel,” and what beliefs are essential to salvation?

In today’s episode, I’m joined by David Geisler, who carries on the work of his father, Dr. Norman Geisler, to help Christians sort the difference between essential and non-essential doctrines—with clarity, charity, and conviction.

We also dig into the 2025 State of Theology research (Lifeway Research commissioned by Ligonier Ministries) and the results are sobering: many professing Christians are confused about core, gospel-defining doctrines like God’s nature, the Trinity, the resurrection, and human sin.

Together, we walk through 15 core essentials—doctrines that directly relate to salvation—and talk about why some truths may be logically necessary even if a new believer can’t articulate them yet. We also discuss why compromise may be one of the biggest threats to the church right now.

0:53.4	in our wishy-washy postmodern world, we think, well, we can all just agree to disagree about everything.
0:59.8	We don't want to have any disunity. We want to make sure we're united together. But the Bible is very
1:04.6	clear when it talks about unity that we're to unify around the one true faith and that we are
1:10.1	to actually guard against false teaching.
1:13.1	And today we're going to be talking about the essentials of the faith, which are beliefs and
1:17.2	doctrines that directly affect salvation. They actually define what the gospel is. And so I want to
1:23.2	read you some of these passages. Second Timothy 4.3 says that a time is coming when people will not
1:28.9	endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit
1:34.5	their own passions. Romans 12 says, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
1:40.6	renewal of your mind, that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God,
1:46.0	what is good and acceptable and perfect.
1:47.9	And, of course, how do we test?
1:48.9	How do we test beliefs?
1:50.4	Well, we test them against what God's word says.
