which is a podcast. It is a hilarious, irreverent, very Australian perspective on surf news.

And I'd also say that its greatest success is offering a really crystalline portrait of surf culture

without any editorializing, without any advertiser influence.

It's a glimpse at Australian surf culture, better represented than any other medium that I know.

But Vaughn's really a magazine man originally, and my favorite work of Vaughn's are his films.

Within the past year alone, he's responsible for the hilariously scripted and original postcards from morgues.

A Rip Curl produced COVID-themed send-up of their

own franchise, The Search. Vaughn's also responsible for last week's internet-breaking free scrubber,

a dream project for any surf filmmaker. Tom Curran had been marooned in Mexico for months

during COVID, and Rip Curl selected Vaughn for the role of sorting through and piecing together all of the raw footage of surfing, B-roll, and interviews that Tom compiled while he was in Mexico.

And that is the precise reason why I wanted to catch up with Vaughn to discuss that film, the rest of

his work, and the current landscape of Surf Media.
