Summary

Welcome to Crawlspace. In this episode, Tim Pilleri & Lance Reenstierna have one of the most thought-provoking and informative conversations of the year as they are joined again by friend of the show, the brilliant Professor Elizabeth Yardley. The focus is on Professor Yardley's article, co-written by award winning crime analysis & founder of the Paladin National Stalking Advocacy Service, Laura Richards, titled The Elephant in the Room: Towards an Integrated Feminist Analysis of Mass Murder. A truly eye-opening work that shines a spotlight on the motivations behind mass violence and how that is historically rooted in domestic violence. Liz is a Professor of Criminology at the School of Social Science, Birmingham City University. She is passionate about making a difference to the lives of those affected by violence and challenging the myths and stereotypes around crime. I'm Tim here today with Lance. Lance, how are you today?

0:32.2

Tim, usually I'd say I'm doing fantastic, but if there is a word that is better than fantastic, that's how I'm feeling right now, because we have a return guest on.

0:40.1

She always brings her A game, and we always leave feeling a lot more informed than when we entered the conversation.

0:46.7

But there's still a piece of information missing here, that being your mood.

0:50.7

How are you?

0:51.5

Thank you very much for asking.

0:52.9

I'm doing great, especially great,

0:55.3

to reintroduce our old friend, Professor Elizabeth Yardley, who is Professor of Criminology,

1:02.3

School of Social Sciences at Birmingham City University. And she's so smart, Lance. She sometimes

1:08.9

will send us research papers that we just love to read.

1:13.0

And this is what happened this time.

1:14.8

She wrote one with Laura Richards, and it's called The Elephant in the Room,

1:19.8

toward an integrated feminist analysis of mass murder.

1:23.8

And it was a very interesting research paper,

1:27.2

and we're so lucky to get to unpack it with

1:29.6

Professor Liz Yardley. Her papers never read as super heavy on the academia side. And in this paper,

1:37.4

they're really trying to identify the why behind mass shootings and how most of them, the majority

1:43.6

of them, have an origin in domestic abuse.

1:46.8

Yeah, it's a fascinating piece of work, Lance. I was blown away. I had never considered that or

1:52.2

thought about that, and I was shocked to read all that. So yeah, it's a very interesting conversation,

1:57.3

hopefully useful info for our listeners. And Liz also has a helpful website for anyone working on

2:04.0

their dissertation, Lance. The website is the degree doctor.com. She's on Instagram and YouTube as well.
