The Bible Study Podcast, episode 351. The Bible Study podcast continues the study of Psalms today with Psalm 51.

0:12.4

Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Now that we get back to the study of the Psalms, I had a letter from Carlos that suggested I add Psalm 51 to this week's Bible studies. So we're doing Psalm 51. One of the interesting things about Psalm 51 is that at the beginning, not only do we learn that this is a Psalm of David, but we also learn when this happens, which I always

0:39.2

appreciate when somebody remembered to write that down. And it says, when the prophet Nathan came to him

0:44.7

after David had committed adultery with Bethsheba. And so that is the context of this particular

0:50.7

Psalm. You may remember that story. King David is doing very well. Things are

0:55.5

going well for him. He's captured Jerusalem. He's moved the archangue Jerusalem. He's having

1:00.7

success on all fronts at this point. And then one night he is on the roof of his house. He looks

1:06.2

over and sees Bathsheba, the neighbor's wife, bathing on the roof. I don't know why the roof seemed like an

1:12.3

appropriate place to bathe, but David saw her, lusted after her, sent for her, slept with her,

1:18.3

got her pregnant, and then tried to get her husband, who had been away fighting for David at the

1:23.6

front, Uzziah the Hittite, to come home sleep with her so that his sin would be concealed

1:29.2

so that everyone would think the baby was Uriah's.

1:32.6

But Yerai wouldn't do that because his men were at the front.

1:35.2

And so David tells his commanders to have Yariah accidentally die in battle,

1:39.0

basically to put him in the front lines and then to draw back so that Uriah would be killed.

1:44.2

And that happens.

1:45.2

And David at this point takes Bathsheba's wife and thinks he's gotten away with it.

1:49.9

But the prophet Nathan comes to him and says,

1:53.1

A rich man has a friend come to town, and rather than taking one of his many sheep,

1:57.5

he goes and takes his neighbor's sheep and serves that to the guest. And David is

2:03.0

incensed because of this injustice and says that that man should die. And then Nathan says,

2:08.9

that man is you. So we have David who the Bible says is a man after God's own heart who is
