When we left off last week, John talked about learning to surf at a small point off Pacific

Coast Highway just south of Malibu called Sunset. By virtue of doing that,

he earned his way into Malibu's better lineups, but shortly after doing so, he looked around

and realized that most of the other surfers who were in the water simply showed up without going

through that justified hazing that he endured.

Many of those valves were sitting around him on wave storms.

They lacked the same respect for the etiquette and hierarchy that he grew up with and that his father and mother instilled in him.

So nearly as soon as he had earned his spot in the lineup at Malibu, he opted to vacate it.
