Happy New Year and welcome back to the show.

There was nothing but positive feedback about

last week's episode with John Lillane so I'm glad to be able to offer you the second part

of that conversation here today. It references some of last week's chat so go back and

listen to part one if you haven't already. Today, we also

do a deep dive into John's work as a board builder, and he references some of his material

suppliers, one of whom is U.S. Blanks, whom I do work for but is not affiliated with this podcast.

US Blanks came up organically from John, as did a competing foam supplier.

None of that conversation was edited nor prompted by me, but it's worth disclosing.

When we left off last week, John talked about learning to surf at a small point off Pacific

Coast Highway just south of Malibu called Sunset. By virtue of doing that,

he earned his way into Malibu's better lineups, but shortly after doing so, he looked around

and realized that most of the other surfers who were in the water simply showed up without going

through that justified hazing that he endured.

Many of those valves were sitting around him on wave storms.

They lacked the same respect for the etiquette and hierarchy that he grew up with and that his father and mother instilled in him.

So nearly as soon as he had earned his spot in the lineup at Malibu, he opted to vacate it.

And that's where we entered today's chat.
