Chapter 17 A New Home

I'm at peace.

Emperor Charmers with a rug wrapped about me, I'm sitting on the balcony outside my bedroom,

looking out over the moonlit garden and listening to the occasional 88s diving at T'Kali

with screaming engines, to the deep threaded explosions, to the echoes fading amongst the

hills, to the mysterious silence that re-invelopes the island.

It is 24 hours since I lifted my service a revolver.

During today Wednesday, May 27th, the bombing has gone on, the pain of the dog wrenching

my stomach has gone on, and I have fought with one-on-ones in the sky.

When orders came through for the squadron to stand down for the night, the CEO arrived

with an unusual invitation, Mary making in the nightclubs of Valetta.

Having so often been accused of taking life too seriously, I decided to go.

The three of us, the CEO, Pantra and myself, looked out through the windows as we drove through

moonlit Valetta, heaps of black rubble, shells of buildings shining with silvery blue light

against the sky, Baroque facades of palaces, eerie and deserted.

We found a centrenue, the partly broken palace of the old masters, and he promised to look

after the car.

The first club was shot.

We tried another.

Its heavy door was solidly unyielding, the merry-makers were probably in the cellars for an enemy
