Summary

The UK’s favourite fitness coach is back with series three of his podcast. This summer, Joe is speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong. Joe's guest this week is presenter and author Katie Piper. Katie was the victim of an acid attack in 2008 which left her with life-changing injuries. In the years that followed Katie has spoken and written about her experiences, and established a foundation to help other people who have suffered similar injuries. Katie talks to Joe about how she recovered her mental and physical health after the attack, and the part exercise played in her recovery. They discuss how she views and preserves her self-confidence today, and why they are both so honest about themselves on social media. They talk about the challenges of balancing work with parenting, and Katie explains how you can be kind to yourself just by writing an email. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won’t stop until you’re fit and happy. Producer: Toby Field Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4

So good morning Katie Piper OBE. Tell me a little bit about what it was like to receive that because I got my MBA this year. So congratulations and how was it?

1:05.0

Oh, do you know what it was quite surreal because for me, my most services to charity, which although it bears my name, it wasn't just me that got us to that point.

1:13.0

We've got a whole group of trusty staff, volunteer, so yeah, it was amazing festival to get it.

1:20.0

It was impossible to keep it a secret because obviously you know you find out a little bit before it gets announced.

1:30.0

I don't know about you, but I loved kind of choosing what to wear, dressing up really smart. I chose my mum as my plus one and we'd like to do our hair and makeup together, went to Windsor Castle.

He's always been in my ear through every workout, through lockdown. So I always said it was our MBA, but it was Princess Anne that gave mine. Who is it that gave you your OBE?

2:06.0

Yeah, I was the same Princess Anne, because I think obviously secretly everyone wants the Queen. I don't know if it's bad to say that, but I think you do.

2:14.0

But when I got Anne, it was amazing because whether she's just got a really good PA or if she's genuinely well researched, she was really like personable.

2:24.0

She knew a lot about my story, the charity. And she talked to me a lot about her own experiences where she's travelled to Bangladesh and she's worked with women and children who have been involved in acid attacks in Bangladesh.
