How did a thrice-married businessman with a history far removed from traditional evangelical ideals become an evangelical favorite?

I explore the cultural, societal, and theological factors that have contributed to this unique alliance. From the political goals of the religious right to the rise of Christian nationalism, we’ll uncover what drives this loyalty and what it says about the intersection of faith and politics in America today.

Additionally, I’m including exclusive clips from my interviews with Sarah McCammon, NPR Political Correspondent, and Adam Kinzinger, former U.S. Congressman, as they offer their insights on this dynamic and the broader implications for American society.

Trigger warning. This podcast contains descriptions of various abusive situations. Listener discretion is

0:07.3

advised. My name is Eric Skritsky. As a former religious fundamentalist, I'm shedding light on the

0:14.1

dark side of the church, from the pulpit to the pews. But I'm not doing it alone. Each week,

0:20.1

I'm sitting down with survivors, advocates,

0:22.5

authors, and more to uncover the inner workings of these abusive religious groups, to give

0:27.9

tactical tips on how to escape and to find out what we can do to take them down. You're listening

0:34.9

to the Preach Boys podcast. Hey, everybody, welcome back to the Preacher

0:38.7

Boys podcast. On today's episode, I want to examine the relationship between Donald Trump

0:43.8

and evangelicals. Now, there's been no shortage of conversation surrounding Trump and

0:49.1

the evangelical voter base, but what's one more video? I want to talk about this because we are post-election,

0:58.0

and a lot of mainstream political pundits are still trying to understand the relationship

1:04.9

between conservative evangelicals and Donald Trump. And as a former fundamentalist myself and as the host of

1:13.3

this podcast, which seeks to understand, you know, religious influence on the culture and

1:20.5

specifically the darker aspects of religious fundamentalism, I think this is something that's

1:25.5

worth talking about. And it's something that personally fascinates me. This show in many ways is to highlight the voices of others, but it's also been a diary of sorts for my own journey in trying to understand all the ways in which my religious fundamentalist upbringing has influenced my perspective and others like mine

1:45.4

when it comes to politics and other aspects of one's worldview.

1:51.7

And the reason I thought about doing this episode is because the Public Religion Research Institute

1:56.3

recently released their post-election survey a couple weeks ago.

2:00.7

And in the wake of the survey,

2:02.8

the president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, Robert P. Jones,

2:07.5

who's also a leading scholar and commentator on religion and politics, released an analysis for

2:12.2

Baptist News Global, saying that the survey dispelled what he called two zombie myths about white evangelical support for Trump.
