| 0:00.0 | The Bible Study Podcast, episode 349. Today, the Bible Study podcast begins a study of Psalms with Psalm 22. |
| 0:11.6 | Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. I mentioned last week that I thought we would start a |
| 0:21.5 | study of the book of Psalms. We're not going to do every psalm, but we're going to do some highlights. |
| 0:26.8 | And I want to start with some of the Psalms of David, including today, Psalm 22. If, by the way, |
| 0:32.1 | you have a favorite Psalm that you would like us to cover on a future episode, let me know. |
| 0:36.4 | And we will try and get to that. |
| 0:38.4 | Psalm 22 is not a happy Psalm. Psalm 22 is the Psalm that we believe that Jesus was quoting as he |
| 0:45.1 | hung on the cross. As Jesus hung there, he said, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? |
| 0:51.7 | And that is the opening line of this Psalm as we will see in a minute. |
| 0:55.5 | And this is a Psalm of David. Psalm 22. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from |
| 1:02.7 | saving me? So far from my cries of anguish. My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer. |
| 1:09.6 | By night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the |
| 1:13.9 | holy one. You are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust. They trusted and you |
| 1:20.2 | delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved. In you they trusted and were not put to shame. |
| 1:26.6 | There's a certain rhythm in the Psalms, and especially |
| 1:29.4 | in this Psalm, Psalm 22, which I wanted to examine. It's one of the reasons why I pulled this one out. |
| 1:35.3 | As you can see, David starts this in a fit of despair. Remember that David spent a fair amount of |
| 1:41.0 | his time about 15 years from the time that he is anointed as king |
| 1:45.0 | till the time he becomes king running from his life from his king and his father-in-law, King Saul. |
| 1:52.7 | And then later on in his life, he spent some time running from his son, Absalom. |
| 1:56.5 | And so David has some difficult times. And my guess is this is probably in that first time when he is running from Saul, |
| 2:04.7 | but I don't know that for sure. |
