G.R. Tweed looked across the Pacific waters at the American ship on the horizon, and brushing the jungle sweat out of his eyes, the young naval officer swallowed deeply and made his decision.

This could be his only opportunity for escape. Tweed had been hiding on the island of Guam for three long years. When the Japanese overtook the

island in 1941, this military officer ducked into the dense brush and went into hiding.

And survival had not been easy, but it was sure better than life in a POW camp.

Late in the day, on July 10th, 1994, he spotted a friendly American vessel.

He scurried up onto a cliff, positioned himself at a high place.

In reaching into his pack, he pulled out a handheld mirror.

And at 6.20 p.m., he began reflecting the sunlight onto the mirror toward the boat,

sending SOS. dot, dot, dot, dash, dash, dash, dash, dot, dot, dot.

Sending messages, appeals for help.

The signal caught the eye of a sailor on the USS McCall.

A rescue party boarded the dinghies and slipped into the cove past the coastal guns, and G.W. Tweed was rescued.

Don't you know he was so glad to have that mirror?
