John chapter 3, verse 30,

He must increase, but I must decrease.

These are John the Baptist words talking about Jesus.

This verse in particular has had a formative effect influence on my life.

Years ago, somebody challenged me when I was young in my faith to have a life verse,

and this is the verse I chose. And I chose it not because it's always true of my heart. I chose it because I

want it to be true of my heart. But here's the challenge. So John the Baptist was talking about Jesus.

John the Baptist is getting a lot of attention. He says, no, no, no, I must decrease. Jesus must

increase.

And I look at my heart, and I think,

so I'm just being a lot level honest with you here,

like I think I truly have a desire to see Jesus increase,

to see Jesus glorified.

But the problem is, I don't usually have a desire to see myself decrease.

Like, I want to see Jesus glorified, and I kind of like the idea of myself increasing, certainly not above him, but increasing in the process.

Like, I like it when others think well of me, and I don't want to decrease.

Like in my flesh, and I know it's from my flesh, like I want to increase.

And so John 3.30 just beckons. Whenever I think about it, which is a lot, John 330 beckons me to live, to pray that God would give me a heart that really does want to decrease so that Jesus might increase. The people would think less about me and only about him as a result of my life.

So God, I pray for this in a fresh way in my heart today.
