In the early 11th century, the English were crushed by the Scots at the Battle of Karim.

We're told that King Malcolm of Scotland, who was supported by King Owing of Strathclyde,

had brought their combined armies to bear against the forces of Elderment Utreth of

Bernissia in 1018, and there they slaughtered the English.

But there's a problem with that story.

According to the Chronicle, Elderment Utreth was already long dead by 1018.

He'd been executed by at least 1016 under the orders of King Canute.

So what happened there?

Well, in the annals of Ulster, there's a record of a battle between Utreth and Malcolm

in 1005.

So perhaps that was the Battle of Karim we're talking about.
