James Trump and his knee-jerk Republican followers are ecstatic over the capture of Venezuelan dictator Maduro.

The military and the intelligence operation was brilliant. No question. And Maduro is a really bad guy, crooked, brutal,

illicitly held office, no question. In addition to most Republicans, even some experts I usually

respect, like retired General Wesley Clark,

said this may really be a good thing and may send an important message to other countries.

I think the downsides are greater, and I pay more attention to Ann Applebaum, Max Boot, Walter Pinkus,

who see really potentially grave dangers ahead.

First, what was the mission? What was the purpose? What was the goal?

Trump had originally said it was because Maduro was a big drug dealer, peddling fentanyl and killing

Americans. Well, actually, it's not true. Maduro peddled illegal drugs, but it wasn't fentanyl,

and most of it was not to the United States.

Moreover, you'll recall it was just a couple weeks ago, or actually a few months ago,

the Trump pardoned, the former Honduran president, who really was a huge drug dealer.
