Summary

In this crucial episode of Battleground: Ukraine, hosts Saul David and Patrick Bishop dissect the high-stakes battle for Pokrovsk, a strategic rail and supply hub now facing an overwhelming Russian onslaught. Despite recent slowdowns in the Russian advance and successful Ukrainian counter-attacks—which have inflicted record casualties on the invaders—the city’s defences appear to be on the verge of collapse. We examine the claims from Ukrainian officials that "We are losing Pokrovsk," the implications of unverified footage showing Russian forces entering the city, and what the loss of this key position would mean for Ukraine’s morale and the entire Donbas "fortress belt." They also dissect the shocking corruption scandal uncovered by Ukraine's anti-corruption units, which demonstrates both the scale of corruption in Ukraine and also the success of measures being used to combat it. We also welcome back friend of the podcast, intrepid Hungarian war reporter Boldi Gyori, who shares his recent experiences from the frontlines in Kramatorsk. hearing from young Hungarian war reporter Boldi Giori,

0:21.3

who spent the last week in Kramatost, a Donets city that is coming under increasing pressure

0:26.5

from the Russians. But a more immediate problem for the Ukrainians is whether or not they can

0:31.0

hold on to the city of Pekrofts. We mentioned last week that it looked set to fall after

0:36.1

18 months of incessant Russian attacks.

0:39.3

Yet surprisingly, at the time of recording, it is still holding out.

0:43.6

Yeah, it is.

0:44.6

I mean, these things tend to drag on, don't they, Saul?

0:46.9

But anyway, the latest we got from the Institute for the study of war shows that actually

0:52.0

the rate of Russian advances into Pocrosk have slowed in recent days.

0:58.8

Russian troops are still struggling to close that pocket. There's been endless reports of them

1:05.3

finally closing the circle and leaving the defenders completely cut off. But that doesn't seem to have happened,

1:13.6

not least because Ukraine's been launching a number of counterattacks, particularly on the northern

1:18.8

shoulder of the battlefields, which appeared have had some success. But clearly it's not going to

1:25.7

end here, is it, because there's a big political element to the operation.

1:31.1

Putin's determined to capture it and convince Trump that Ukraine is losing the war.

1:36.7

But, you know, as always, this comes to the cost.

1:38.9

So we've got some new numbers to show just how painful it is for the Russians.

1:43.3

You've got 170,000 troops in there,

1:46.5

and they've actually suffered, according to President Zelensky. This is a record 25,000 killed

1:54.8

and wounded in the Pogrovsk Theatre in October alone. This is climbing up. It was 15,000 in January. We ask ourselves
