In April 1942 Denis Barnham flew his Spitfire off the deck of an aircraft carrier and headed for Malta, where the air battle over the island was at its most intense. This brilliant account of his time on the island offers a compelling and honest account of the terror of the battle and of life on Malta under siege. Read by Al Murray. 0:48.8	12 o'clock, still no raid, everyone apprehensive.
0:52.6	3pm, been drawing Uncle Bosworth, officer in charge here, with his plump figuring
0:56.8	carcass shorts and shirt overflowing lounge armchair.
0:59.4	He stared at me, pebble eyes through horn rims specs, asked me what huns were up to.
1:03.6	I don't know.
1:04.6	3.30 now, still no raid, don't like it.
1:07.5	Uncle sat very still, flies crawled all over him, played hopscotch on his tattoo
1:11.3	arms, polished their feet on his bald head.
1:14.1	He didn't move.
1:15.6	Just an involuntary twitch of his curled moustache.
1:18.5	4pm, eerie silence continues.
1:20.8	5pm, sun, hot, been swimming, still no raid, now looking at Diana's photo, always
