Summary

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

What in your inner world enables you to fully show up in the outer world? What is more important: What you have or how you feel?

On this week's podcast, you'll meet Susan David, PhD, who has dedicated her life to emotional health. She'll inform you how to ask yourself better questions, lean into pain (when necessary), and craft a truly fulfilling life based on your values.

Listen & Learn:

  • Why our inner world often matters more than the outer world
  • How to uncover your individual ‘why’ and define your core values
  • Why ‘have-to’ goals are impossible, whereas value-based goals actually work
  • Why approach goals are powerful, but adverse goals are even stronger
  • Why ‘smile or die’ can actually cause you less joy and make it more difficult to find peace
  • How to show up and hold space for pain and suffering
  • What was worth my while today

the smile or die personality. This is the person when you walk in the room who forces a

smile. You're not sure if they'll laugh or if they'll cry. They give you a hug that's a little

too strong and even though on the outside they might look happy in air quotes very

0:26.1

clearly you can see that they're suffering on the inside and this tendency to

0:30.6

cover up pain with smiles to cover up tragedy with laughter is really

0:36.1

rampant in mind-body health circles and it's really destructive. In fact there's

0:39.9

research to show that it can actually have the opposite effect. This overriding of your

true feelings can actually bounce back and make you less happy. On this week's show we'll

emotional health and emotional health is so much more important. How you feel is

1:08.2

so much more important than how you look, how you feel is so much more important

than what you have. How you feel is really everything and so if you wake up in the morning and you have

nothing but you feel awesome and you're optimistic and you're light and
