I wanted to do a small mini-series and cover a few crimes where Valentine's Day went terribly, terribly wrong.

You are listening to Episode 34, Love Hurts, Denise Luthold.

Denise was born on February 3rd, 1974, in Miami-Dade County, Florida, to parents Douglas and Diane

Newton.

In 1992, she graduated from Faith Baptist Christian School in Perkin, Illinois, which was a

Bible-centered school that provided classes

for preschool to high school-aged kids. Denise was a devout member of the LaMarche Baptist Church

in Mapleton, Illinois. At age 21, she married Nathan Luthold on July 15, 1997, in LaSalle, Illinois. He was kind of typical

in that he enjoyed sports like baseball and was a hunter. Nathan rarely showed emotion and operated

rationally. He enjoyed working and often took on large projects.

Religion was of great importance for the Lutholds, and they traveled to Lithuania in 1998 for missionary work.

By 2013, the Lutholds were living back in Peoria, Illinois.

Denise, Nathan, and their three kids moved in with Doug and Diane Newton,

who were Denise's parents. On February 12, 2013, 37-year-old named Nathan Luthold called the police right after midnight and said he saw a suspicious vehicle parked across the street from his

residence.

When the officer arrived and searched the area, the car had already left.
