Summary

Shadows gather at the edges of quiet forests and lonely backroads where people report encounters with figures that seem neither fully human nor animal. They speak of upright wolves, phantom predators and beings that watch with knowing eyes before slipping back into the dark as though they were never there at all. On the episode we follow these chilling accounts, explore the patterns within them and ask what kind of world exists just beyond the firelight. In the Plus+ extension the wilderness gives way to a different kind of unknown. We explore the strange and compelling world of channelling, where messages arrive through unconscious writing and unseen hands seem to guide the pen. Some believe these communications offer comfort or guidance but others warn they are unpredictable forces that do not always come in kindness. Once you open the door you cannot always choose who steps through. Welcome to Mysterious Universe, Season 34, Episode 19.

0:20.9

Coming up on this show, we've got Super Soaker Holy Water,

0:23.4

when curiosity beckons monsters and cracking the angel code.

0:28.3

I'm your host, Benjamin Grundy.

0:29.3

Joining me is Aaron Wright.

0:30.5

Is this the follow-up to the book that we covered on The Last Plus episode?

0:33.5

Yeah, so on the last plus episode, we did Gazing into the Afterlife Irene Blinston, who during her doctorate program in the early 2000s, was part of a study into the, was it, the psychomantium.

0:46.9

Yeah.

0:47.1

And the psychomantium is a setup that induces an alter state of consciousness.

0:51.3

And essentially, the participant would be in an enclosed, you know, light

0:54.6

controlled space. And they stare into a mirror. Well, not into the mirror. Or yes, it's at an angle,

1:00.5

right? They couldn't see their reflection, but the mirror would create a mirrored surface that they

1:05.3

would stare at for about an hour. And the whole purpose was the participants in the study had just

1:10.7

lost a loved one.

1:11.7

So it was to test whether the psychomantium would help them get over their grief.

1:17.1

So Irene was a part of this program and many of the participants, as we reported on the

1:22.8

last plus show, had incredible interactions, either seeing things in the surface of the mirror, like

1:29.1

old school scrying or having visual stimulation. Some people reported feeling unseen hands,

1:36.6

touching them. Well, it gets rather wild, doesn't it? Yeah. It does absolutely escalate. Some

1:41.3

people heard voices of their loved ones. There were even apparitions

1:44.9

appearing. So pretty bizarre stuff. And it was funny because while we were covering that,

1:50.3

we were saying to ourselves, you know, this really does sound like just open spirit communication.
