Mark 13: 24-32 - 'The stars will fall from heaven and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 474 (in 'Christ's Soul and his human knowledge') - By its union to the divine wisdom in the person of the Word incarnate, Christ enjoyed in his human knowledge the fullness of understanding of the eternal plans he had come to reveal. What he admitted to not knowing in this area, he elsewhere declared himself not sent to reveal.

- 673 (in 'The glorious advent of Christ, the hope of Israel') - Since the Ascension Christ's coming in glory has been Imminent, even though "it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. This eschatological coming could be accomplished at any moment, even if both it and the final trial that will precede it are "delayed".

- 2612 (in 'Jesus teaches us how to pray') - In Jesus "the Kingdom of God is at hand." He calls his hearers to conversion and faith, but also to watchfulness. In prayer the disciple keeps watch, attentive to Him Who Is and Him Who Comes, in memory of his first coming in the lowliness of the flesh, and in the hope of his second coming in glory. In communion with their Master, the disciples' prayer is a battle; only by keeping watch in prayer can one avoid falling into temptation."

where you read it and you do your best to analyze it but you still kind of come away thinking

0:25.9

did I fully understand that? There's always sort of an element of things don't always

So we're going to go through verse by verse, as we always do.

But this is one of the more difficult passages, and certainly biblical scholars disagree on the

best way to interpret various phrases within this.

So Mark chapter 13, verses 24 to 32. Jesus said to his disciples, in those days after the time

of distress, the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will come

falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

1:16.6

Then too he will send the angels to gather his chosen from the four winds,

from the ends of the world to the ends of heaven.

1:25.6

Take the fig tree as a parable.

1:28.3

As soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

1:34.3

So with you, when you see these things happening, know that he is near at the very gates.

1:42.3

I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away, all these things will have taken

place.

1:50.2

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

1:55.7

But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven nor the sun, no one but the father.

2:05.5

So that's our reading for today. You've probably heard this before, maybe in the context of people

talking about the end of the world. So let's see what we can make of the text here. What's the
