It’s Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with political commentator Owen Jones to discuss the outcomes of the recent UK elections. First, they run through updates on the increasing problem for Democrats that is Biden’s white-knuckled-hold on his candidacy, Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the corruption of Clarence Thomas, environmental emergency in the US, NATO’s summit, the FTC, and the US’ green transition, before touching on Nancy Pelosi’s telling take on Biden’s future. Owen Jones then joins, first contextualizing the (predictable) implosion of the Tories in the UK’s recent elections within the long string of constant Conservative controversy (be it policy or personal) that has defined the British Prime Ministership during the post-Brexit Tory reign, before expanding on the expectations for this year’s elections, with Labour’s political strategy winning them a landslide majority despite just under 34% of the vote, a result somewhat overshadowed by the major success of Left alternatives (like the Green Party) and independents (like Jeremy Corbyn), as well as the takeoff of Nigel Farage of the hardline right Reform UK. Next, Jones steps back and parses through the role that the UK’s first-past-the-post election system played in bolstering Labour’s electoral win, and why the success of independent challengers is such an astonishing result, before expanding on the tension between Labour and the British left following the anti-Corbynist purge, as well as the role incoming PM Keir Starmer plays within that context. After unpacking the future of a ruling coalition in the UK, they wrap up the interview by unpacking the major disappointment of Brexit and the precarious nature of liberals’ desire to return to “normalcy.”
