It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Alexander Avina, professor of Mexican & Latin American History at Arizona State University, to discuss the recent results in Mexico's elections. Then, she speaks with Dr. Dan Wilson, from the YouTube channel Debunk The Funk, to discuss his recent video on Bret Weinstein and the recent Congressional committee hearings featuring Dr. Fauci. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s attack on a school shelter in Gaza, Israel’s obstruction to a ceasefire, Netanyahu’s turn to Hezbollah, Biden’s polling bump, Fani Willis’ major mishaps, Mondaire Jones’ conservative turn, abuse in Wisconsin prisons, NYC’s congestion pricing plan, and climate change, also parsing through Byron Donald’s attempt to “contextualize” his claim that Black families were stronger under Jim Crow. Professor Alex Aviña then joins, diving right into México’s overwhelming election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the continent’s first Jewish or female President, and an important stamp of approval as she heads into office hoping to cement President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) 20-point progressive platform, an agenda that will need all of the Morena coalition’s Lower House supermajority and Senate near-supermajority. Professor Aviña then steps back, walking Emma through the major reforms AMLO achieved during his 6-year term, including major judicial, economic, and labor changes materially (and visually) improving the lives of a vast majority of working-class Mexicans, before tackling some of the major leftist critiques of his Administration, including its “reformist” take on neoliberalism, continued support for the war on drugs, militant border maintenance for the US, and a non-transparent infrastructure project on the Yucatan peninsula. Aviña also expands on the central role ALMO’s ability to be a strong negotiator in US-Mexico relations played in his success, before wrapping up with the major role Sheinbaum’s Administration can play in cementing the progress (and righting some wrongs) of Mexico’s major progress over the last 6 years. Dr. Dan Wilson then jumps right into some of the major problems with public discourse around vaccines, such as their majorly misunderstood purpose and risks, and how the poor public health communication and severe misinformation during COVID severely inflamed these issues. Dr. Wilson then walks Emma through some of the major players in the anti-vax crusade of the last few decades, including third-party presidential candidate and HIV-AIDS denier RFK, before wrapping up with a conversation on long-COVID and vaccinations.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with an anonymous caller about the importance of DACA recipients applying for legal entry before a potential Trump Administration 2.0, and Jack from Ireland dives into Derry’s colonial divide. They also discuss the recent photos from the assault of a journalist by Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem, parse through Gov. Hochul’s disastrous decision to kill NYC’s congestion pricing program (with help from Adam from New Brunswick), and laugh with (and at) some comedians, plus your calls and IMs!
