For over 150 years, Blackpool has been Britain's playground by the sea. What started as a modest Victorian resort on the Lancashire coast grew into something uniquely British.

It was a place where working class families could escape their factories and terrace streets for a week of sea air and entertainment.

And by 2003, Blackpool was adapting to change.

Package holidays to Spain and beyond attempted many people away,

leaving Britain's seaside resorts to fight for their place.

But still, Blackpool endured.

That year, Halloween fell on a Sunday.

Blackpool embraced the occasion with its usual flair.

Shop windows displayed, plastic skeletons and artificial cobwebs.

Pumpkins sat carved and glowing.

And pubs organised Halloween nights to entice locals and tourists alike.

The Winter Gardens hosted large-themed parties parties and the streets filled with costumed revellers.

For a weekend Blackpool was alive with people moving between venues, their voices carrying above the noise of the arcades and the seafront.

But by the following evening, Monday the 1st of November, the atmosphere had shifted.

The celebrations were over and the town returned to its quieter, off-season rhythm.
