Birthright citizenship in the United States is rooted in the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, ratified back in 1868.

It states that all persons born are naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.

This has long been interpreted to grant automatic citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil.
