Summary

In this powerful, hope-filled episode, I sit down with Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart, clinical psychologist and parenting expert, to talk about what's really going on beneath the surface during the teen years.

She unpacks what to do when your teen shuts down, why nagging and lecturing don't work, how to reset when you've lost your cool, and how to support your teen without losing yourself in the process.

From messy rooms to slammed doors and screen-time battles, this episode will give you practical tools to reconnect with your teen, regulate your own emotions, and build a stronger relationship—without the shame spiral or the power struggles.

Because behind every behavior is a need. And when you meet your child with curiosity instead of control, that's when real change happens.

💬 Whether you're parenting a tween, teen, or just want to prepare for what's ahead, this one is a must-listen.

What You'll Learn:

  • Why the behavior you see isn't the full story (and what to focus on instead)

  • How to navigate the belief → behavior gap with empathy

  • The best questions to ask your teen (even when they say "I don't know")

  • A simple strategy to reset yourself before reacting

  • How to stop parenting from fear and build connection instead

  • Why phones and social media are creating emotional dysregulation—and what to do about it

  • When to lean in, when to back off, and how to build trust in the hardest moments

So I don't have teenagers yet, but I'll be honest. I feel like there's the same type of fear

1:13.5

creeping in that I remember when my boys were really little when they were babies, because back

1:18.0

then everyone warned me about the terrible twos and terrible threes. And I think just that label alone

1:23.8

created so much stress and expectation before I even got to that point. And I really feel the

1:29.1

same, if I'm being honest, about heading into teenage years. And again, I was a teenager. We were all

1:34.5

teenagers. We remember how, like, how that's a tough time. Like the eye rolls, the slam doors,

1:39.9

the ups and downs and moods, like everything. Plus, like culture culture has already told me, this is going to be really, really hard.

And I know I'm not the only parent that feels this way, which is why I'm really excited for today's conversation,

1:51.1

because I know Dr. Anne got to know her over the last year or so. And she takes such a refreshing

approach to this particular season of parenting and really a whole lot of other things.

And I know myself and my listeners are going to walk away, feeling encouraged instead of afraid.

So Anne, welcome back. I'm so excited to chat with you again.
