Summary

We dig into Galatians 5 and Paul’s blunt warning that adding anything to Jesus turns grace into a dead end. We remind ourselves why the gospel has to stay simple because it leaks out of our minds and we drift back to earning. • Judaizers in Galatia teaching Jesus plus circumcision • why adding any requirement implies Christ’s work is unfinished • “severed from Christ” and the seriousness of law based justification • faith as whole trust in Christ’s cross and resurrecti...

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the spirit, the primary

0:07.2

spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin

0:12.8

and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.

0:20.2

All right, day two, Galatians chapter five, we're going to pick

0:22.8

it up in verse two. Paul says, look, I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision,

0:31.2

Christ will be of no advantage to you. In other words, again, in the church of Galatia,

0:36.8

some Judaizers had moved in,

0:39.2

and they were teaching the church that belief in Jesus, life, death, and resurrection was not enough

0:45.0

to save you. You had to add this religious ritual that was a symbol of God's covenant with

0:51.6

the nation of Israel, that you had to be circumcised first in order

0:55.6

and in addition to what Christ has done for you. And so what Paul is saying is that if you accept

1:01.4

that, if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage of you because what you're saying

1:06.6

to him is when you pushed up on your nail pierce feet and says it is finished, you did not

1:11.3

completely finish the work. You did not fully redeem me. You did not fully pay for my sin.

1:16.8

Now I have to do something to add to what you are doing. And so if you accept circumcision,

1:23.0

Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is

1:29.7

obligated to keep the whole law. Then he says in verse four, you are severed from Christ. This is an

1:36.8

intentional pun. The word here severed means to be cut off. And so again, we're going to talk about this

1:42.3

tomorrow, but this phrase is a little offensive

1:45.5

and a little vulgar. What he's saying is, if you think it's Jesus plus anything, then you have

1:51.9

completely missed everything about the gospel. He says, you are severed from Christ. You who would

1:58.0

be justified by the law, you have fallen away from grace.
