I'm your host, Heather Ashley, and today you'll be hearing part two of the Leslie Howell and Trevor Buchanan case.

Small talk sucks, so let's dive in.

Music Starting with a recap of part one here on May 19th of 1991, Leslie Howell and Trevor Buchanan

were both found dead inside of Leslie's car, which had been parked in her father's garage. A pathologist

ruled the cause of death as carbon monoxide poisoning, and despite several suspicious details at the scene,

police didn't believe foul play was involved. Their deaths were ruled a double suicide,

supposedly driven by heartbreak after learning about their spouses, Colin Howell and Hazel Buchanan,

having had an affair. The original investigation was deeply

flawed, to say the least. Critical evidence was overlooked and inconsistencies were brushed aside.

That failure allowed Colin to get away with murder, or at least that's what he thought.

Colin and Hazel stayed together

for years after the deaths, but in 1996, Hazel met someone new and left Colin. Colin moved on

to marrying a woman named Kyle in 1997. For a while, things seemed fine, but in the summer of 1998, everything changed. One night after

dinner, Colin told Kyle there was something he needed to confess. First, he admitted that he'd been

unfaithful, not just to her, but during his first marriage,

with a woman named Hazel. But then he told her something worse. He said that he had killed his

first wife, Leslie, the mother of his children, along with Hazel's husband, Trevor. He confessed to

staging the entire thing to look like some suicide

pact. After Colin confessed, he begged Kyle not to go to authorities, saying, just take a deep breath.

It's waited seven years. You can wait one more day. We need to sort the children.

Kyle later explained that she didn't tell anyone.
